Michael K. Cernyar is the named principal of the firm. He is admitted to the California Bar, the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals, along with admission to the Central, Eastern & Southern Districts of the U.S. District Court of California.
A student at Purdue University, Mr. Cernyar maintained a 4.0 GPA in engineering. He holds a Bachelor of Arts in Economics from California State University at Long Beach. At
Loyola Law School, he was the recipient of the Lexis-Nexis legal research competition and participated in Scott Moot Court. Moreover, Michael Cernyar is a member of the Golden Key National Honor Society and Omicron Delta Epsilon, an international honor society.
Upon graduation, Michael accepted a position with a member of the Federal Public Defender’s Office Indigent Panel for three years. Afterward, he entered private practice. Later, Mr. Cernyar was an associate at the law firm of Smith, Chapman & Campbell. His practice expanded to include civil litigation.
Eventually, Mr. Cernyar was an attorney at the Cochran Firm, where he was nominated as their top attorney before starting the Law Offices of Michael K. Cernyar. Mr. Cernyar has gained a reputation for defending corporate executives, law enforcement officers, politician’s family members, studio employees, medical and computer professionals.
Mr. Cernyar is recognized as one of the nation’s prominent defense attorneys. His list of cases includes the defense of Robert Blake, Christian Rideout (in the disappearance of Madeleine McCann in Portugal), Operation Casablanca, and the Los Angeles Cannabis Resource Center.
Mr. Cernyar frequently speaks as a guest legal commentator on national television and is called upon for his legal expertise. He has appeared on The Verdict with Paula Todd, along with ABC and CBS news. In addition, Mr. Cernyar has been interviewed by numerous newspapers, including the Wall Street Journal.
Less known, but equally important, is Mr. Cernyar’s expertise in healthcare law. Recently he successfully represented a Medicare supplier. In addition, Mr. Cernyar has successfully represented several physicians in insurance and Medicare audits. Furthermore, his list of healthcare fraud cases include: National Pain Institute v. Republic Indemnity; People v. Ngoc Nguyen; and United States v. Luong, et al; amongst
other
matters. Mr. Cernyar also has expertise in Medicare appeals. Moreover, Mr. Cernyar’s healthcare clientele has included Pacificare, American Medical International (now Tenet Healthcare), and Professional Healthcare Systems (now Keane, Inc.).
Mr. Cernyar's civil practice also includes representation of small businesses and technology firms. Mr. Cernyar has represented firms in licensing matters, joint venture agreements, business alliances, and employee matters.
Mr. Cernyar has extensively provided expertise on computer matters. His clientele has included: Microsoft, Xerox, Nestle’s , GTE (now Verizon), Paramount
Studios, Shell Oil, Mattel, Teledyne, Northrop-Gruman, and the federal
government.
In his leisure, Mr. Cernyar enjoys tennis and golf, along with his love to travel. He resides in the Los Angeles area.
Mr. Cernyar is a member to many legal organizations, including the American
Bar Association, National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers, California
Attorneys for Criminal Justice, California Public Defenders Association, and
the Los Angeles County Bar Association.
